Biography & Historical Record

Xun You (荀攸, Tuân Du), courtesy name Gongda (公达, Công Đạt), was Cao Cao’s master tactician — older than his nephew Xun Yu (荀彧, Tuân Úc) but junior in clan rank. A Gentleman of the Yellow Gate under Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác), he joined a failed assassination plot with He Yong (何颙, Hà Ngung) and Zheng Tai (鄭泰, Trịnh Thái), was imprisoned while his co-conspirator died of fear, and was released only after Lu Bu killed Dong Zhuo (192 AD). Xun Yu recommended him to Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) in 196 AD as Master of Writing.

Unlike flamboyant advisers, Xun You spoke little in council yet shaped nearly every decisive battle Cao Cao personally fought. Cao Cao kept him at his side from Yanzhou through Guandu, Xiapi, Hebei pacification, and the Yangtze buildup — the quiet counterweight to Xun Yu’s civil architecture and Guo Jia’s bold improvisation.

With Guo Jia (郭嘉, Quách Gia) he flooded Xiapi to capture Lu Bu (Chapter 19). At Guandu he decoyed Yan Liang (颜良, Nhan Lương) and Wen Chou (文丑, Văn Sú) to their deaths (Chapters 25–26) and urged trusting Xu You (许攸, Hứa Du)’s Wuchao intelligence (Chapter 30). He advised exploiting Yuan Shao’s sons’ civil war (Chapters 32–33), accompanied the Wuhuan campaign, and warned at Chibi against chained ships and southern fire tactics. Cao Cao praised his hidden depth: “outer weakness, inner strength.” Twelve major stratagems he shared only with Zhong Yao (钟繇, Chung Dao) were lost when Zhong Yao died first.

After Guandu he guided the exploitation of Yuan Tan versus Yuan Shang (Chapters 32–33), the Wuhuan expedition against Yuan Shang‘s allies, and planning for the Yangtze crossing. At Chibi (Chapter 44 onward) he cautioned against linking ships and underestimating fire on the river — counsel Cao Cao overruled, leading to the great defeat. When Liu Bei fled Wu with Lady Sun (孙尚香, Tôn Thượng Hương) in Chapter 54, Cao Cao’s southern pursuit strained the army; Xun You, long ailing, dies on the march — the novel’s timing for losing Cao Cao’s subtlest field tactician. Historically he died in 214 AD on campaign against Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền), posthumously enfeoffed as Marquis Jing (敬侯).

Chapter 30: Convinces Cao Cao to trust Xu You and raid Wuchao — the tactical decision that wins Guandu.

Chapter 25–26: Diversion at Boma and Yanford removes Yuan Shao’s champions Yan Liang and Wen Chou before the main Guandu stalemate.

Chapter 54: Already ailing on the southern campaign; dies on the march when Cao Cao learns Liu Bei and Lady Sun have escaped — the novel marks the loss of Cao Cao’s subtlest field strategist.
