Biography & Historical Record

Xun Shen (荀谌, 荀諶, Tuân Thẩm; c. 160s–c. 200s AD), courtesy name Youruo (友若, Hữu Nhược), was an eminent grand strategist of the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the fourth son of Xun Guan and the fourth elder brother of Cao Cao’s supreme advisor Xun Yu (荀彧), belonging to the illustrious Yingchuan Xun clan.

Celebrated for his razor-sharp rhetoric and strategic foresight, Xun Shen initially served Governor Han Fu in Ji Province. In 191 AD, he allied with Yuan Shao and personally entered Ye to conduct diplomatic persuasion upon Han Fu, famously analyzing the geopolitical perils facing the province. His eloquence convinced Han Fu to voluntarily surrender the imperial seal of Ji Province to Yuan Shao without shedding a single drop of blood, laying the territorial cornerstone of Yuan Shao’s northern hegemony. Alongside Tian Feng and Jushou, Xun Shen served as Yuan Shao’s chief military planner during the Battle of Guandu.
