Biography & Historical Record

Xun Yu (荀彧, Tuân Úc), courtesy name Wenruo (文若, Văn Nhược), was Cao Cao’s chief civil adviser — the “king-assisting talent” (王佐之才) praised by He Yong (何颙, Hà Ngung). From the great Yingchuan Xun clan — grandfather Xun Shu among the “Eight Dragons,” uncle Xun Shuang (荀爽, Tôn Sảng) as Excellency over the Masses — he fled Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác), served Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) briefly, then joined Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) in 191 AD as “my Zhang Liang.”

He held Juancheng with Cheng Yu (程昱, Trình Dục) when Lu Bu (吕布, Lã Bố) and Chen Gong (陈宫, Trần Cung) invited Lu Bu into Yan Province (Chapter 11), saving Juancheng, Dong’a, and Fanxian — the last foothold before Cao Cao retook Yanzhou. He welcomed Emperor Xian (汉献帝, Hán Hiến Đế) to Xuchang (Chapter 14) and scouted talent: nephew Xun You (荀攸, Tuân Du), Guo Jia (郭嘉, Quách Gia), Zhong Yao (钟繇, Chung Dao), Chen Qun (陈群, Trần Quần), Xi Zhicai (戏志才, Hí Chí Tài), and later Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý).

At Guandu (Chapter 30) he wrote from Xuchang urging Cao Cao to hold when provisions ran low, comparing the standoff to Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. He devised “Drive the Tiger to Devour the Wolf” against Liu Bei and Lu Bu (Chapter 16), urged destroying Lu Bu before Yuan Shao (Chapter 18), and analyzed Yuan Shao’s command flaws (Chapter 22). While Cao Cao fought, Xun Yu ran Xuchang — grain, conscription, imperial ritual — so Guandu was a national, not merely field, gamble.

Yet he remained loyal to the Han throne in name and conscience: when Dong Zhao (董昭, Đổng Chiêu) memorialized for Cao Cao to become Duke of Wei with the Nine Bestowments (Chapter 61), Xun Yu argued that Cao Cao’s mission was to restore the imperial house, not to accumulate personal honors. Cao Cao sent him to Shouchun on pretense of rewarding troops, then an empty food vessel — no salary, no place at table. Xun Yu opened the box, understood the message, and swallowed poison at fifty. Posterity verse laments Yingchuan’s pure minister destroyed by the very power he helped build.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 30: Letter from the capital keeps Cao Cao at Guandu until Xu You’s defection and the Wuchao raid break Yuan Shao.

Chapter 61: Opposes the Duke of Wei title; empty lunchbox; suicide by poison — death of the Han loyalist within Cao Cao’s camp.
