Biography & Historical Record of Zheng Tai

Zheng Tai was a prominent court official and strategist during the tumultuous late Eastern Han Dynasty. Renowned for his sharp political intellect and foresight, he served as a Gentleman of the Interior and later advanced to the prestigious rank of Shàngshū (Chancellor of the Secretariat). When General-in-Chief He Jin contemplated inviting regional warlords into the capital, he famously warned against summoning Dong Zhuo to Luoyang, presciently comparing the frontier general to a ravenous wolf.

Following Dong Zhuo’s violent usurpation of imperial authority and the subsequent relocation of the Han capital to Chang’an, he secretly conspired with fellow ministers, including Wang Yun and Xun Shuang, to overthrow the tyrant. Recognizing the mounting perils within the imperial court, he eventually fled southward to seek refuge with warlord Yuan Shu, but tragically died of illness in 192 AD.

In Luo Guanzhong’s historical epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zheng Tai is depicted as an upright loyalist working covertly against warlord tyranny. His portrayal underscores his reputation for integrity, tactical brilliance, and active coordination with regional leaders to restore imperial authority.
