The Legend of Yang Xiong in Water Margin
Yang Xiong (杨雄) is one of the pivotal 108 Liangshan heroes in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally employed as an executioner and head jailer in Jizhou, he earned the nickname “Sick Guan Suo” because of his pale, handsome complexion paired with deadly martial skill that recalled the legendary general Guan Suo.
His story takes a dramatic turn during the late Northern Song Dynasty. After discovering his unfaithful wife’s treacherous affair with a deceptive monk, Yang Xiong executed the conspirators on Mount Cuiping in righteous indignation. Aided by his trusted sworn brother Shi Xiu, he abandoned his municipal post and fled to join the outlaw brotherhood at Liangshan Marsh.
Role and Martial Legacy
Within the Liangshan ranks, he was revered for his blade mastery and absolute devotion to his allies. Recognized as the Heavenly Fierce Star, he held the 32nd seat among the 108 Stars of Destiny. Yang Xiong served faithfully as an elite infantry commander, leading frontline assaults against imperial suppressors and rival factions.
