Biography of Gu Dasao
Gu Dasao is one of the three renowned female chieftains depicted in the classical Chinese epic Water Margin. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Northern Song Dynasty, her narrative showcases exceptional grit and combat mastery. Operating an unassuming tavern near Dengzhou alongside her husband Sun Xin, she possessed physical strength and tactical cunning that rivaled the finest male fighters of her era. Feared and respected by both allies and adversaries, she earned the fearsome moniker “Female Tiger” for her unyielding temperament.
Role in the Liangshan Rebellion
Her defining moment arrived when her cousins, the hunters Xie Zhen and Xie Bao, were unjustly imprisoned. Taking command of the crisis, she orchestrated a daring jailbreak, persuading her brother-in-law Sun Li to defect from the imperial garrison. Following their escape, the group fled to the marshlands to join the 108 Stars of Destiny.
Within the stronghold, she assumed command of the Eastern Tavern, serving as a frontline intelligence operative. Ranked 101st among the Liangshan heroes as the Earth Yin Star, she played crucial roles in reconnaissance and guerrilla warfare. When the outlaws received an imperial amnesty to suppress hostile factions, she joined the perilous military campaigns, including the brutal expedition against the rebel leader Fang La. Notably, she emerged unharmed and retired peacefully to Dengzhou.
