Biography & Historical Record

Lady Fan (范氏, Phạm thị) was a distinguished noblewoman of the Chu-Han Contention (楚汉相争) and early Western Han Dynasty. Hailing from Juchao, she was the daughter of the towering strategist and counselor Fan Zeng (范增, Phạm Tăng, revered by Hegemon-King Xiang Yu as “Second Father” / Yafu).

To forge an unshakeable military and political alliance between Xiang Yu’s supreme command and the fiercely independent general Ying Bu (英布 / 黥布, Kình Bố, King of Jiujiang), Fan Zeng bestowed Lady Fan in marriage upon Ying Bu. Renowned for her intelligence, classical decorum, and political discernment, Lady Fan managed Ying Bu’s princely household with grace. Even when Ying Bu eventually defected from Xiang Yu to align with Liu Bang following Sui He’s diplomacy, Lady Fan remained his principal consort, providing wise counsel and domestic stability through the bloody founding wars of the Western Han empire.
