Biography & Historical Record

Fan Zeng (范增, Phạm Tăng) was a prominent strategist and advisor to Xiang Yu (项羽, Hạng Vũ) during the fall of the Qin Dynasty and the subsequent Chu-Han Contention. At the age of 70, he joined the rebellion against the Qin. He is most famous for advising Xiang Yu to restore the state of Chu and install Xiong Xin (熊心, Hùng Tâm) as King Huai of Chu to gain legitimacy. Fan Zeng was a master of political maneuvering and recognized the threat posed by Liu Bang (刘邦, Lưu Bang) early on. He famously organized the Hongmen Banquet (鸿门宴, Hồng Môn Yến) with the intention of eliminating Liu Bang, but his plan was thwarted by Xiang Yu’s indecisiveness and the intervention of Zhang Liang (张良, Trương Lương). His deep insight and unwavering loyalty to the Chu cause earned him the title of ‘Ya Fu’ (亞父), or ‘Grandfather-figure’, from Xiang Yu. His downfall came when Liu Bang’s agent, Chen Ping (陈平, Trần Bình), sowed seeds of distrust between him and Xiang Yu, leading to his resignation and eventual death from illness.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

While Fan Zeng does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a character (as he lived centuries prior), he is frequently referenced by strategists like Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) and Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý) as the archetype of the brilliant but ultimately undermined advisor, serving as a historical lesson in political strategy and the necessity of a decisive lord.
