Biography and Legend of Shi Xiu
Shi Xiu (石秀) is one of the most celebrated fictional heroes in the classic Chinese masterpiece Water Margin. Originally a modest merchant hailing from Jiankang, he is renowned for his quick wit, unparalleled martial prowess, and fierce sense of justice. Nicknamed “The Rash Life-Risker” (拼命三郎), his moniker reflects an extraordinary willingness to risk his own life whenever defending righteousness or protecting innocent companions.
Set amidst the declining years of the Northern Song Dynasty, his narrative highlights the moral decay of local officials and the brotherhood forged among outlaws. He is especially revered for exposing the betrayal orchestrated by Lu Junyi’s unfaithful wife and corrupt steward, culminating in an audacious rooftop rescue at Daming Prefecture that cemented his status among the 108 Stars of Destiny.
