Madam Ding (丁氏, Đinh Thị) was the wife of Cao Song (曹嵩, Tào Tung), courtesy Jugao (巨高, Cự Cao), and the mother of Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo), courtesy Mengde (孟德, Mạnh Đức). Chen Shou’s Sanguozhi Wei 1 (武帝纪) names Cao Song and traces the Cao line through the eunuch Cao Teng (曹腾, Tào Đằng) but does not give the mother’s personal name; later Cao clan genealogies record her as a Ding-clan lady (丁氏). This page uses the site’s established label Madam Ding so she can sit in the Family wiki beside her husband and son — not a claim that Luo Guanzhong named her in Chapter 1.

Through her marriage into the wealthy Qiao Cao house, she bore the boy who would become the northern unifier and Wei founder. Pei Songzhi’s annotations preserve the rumor that Cao Song’s birth surname was Xiahou — which would make Cao Cao a cousin of Xiahou Dun (夏侯惇, Hạ Hầu Đôn) and Xiahou Yuan (夏侯渊, Hạ Hầu Uyên) — but whether that theory is true, the mother who raised Mengde at Qiao belongs to the Song marriage, not to Cao Cao’s later wives. When Cao Song rose to Grand Commandant under Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế) and accumulated the baggage wealth that would travel toward Xu Province, she was the matron of that household. In 193 AD Cao Song and younger son Cao De (曹德, Tào Đức) were murdered by the renegade escort Zhang Kai (张闿, Trương Khải); Cao Cao blamed Tao Qian (陶谦, Đào Khiêm) and launched the Xu campaigns of vengeance. The novel shows the killing in Chapter 10; the widow mother is not staged, but the grief belongs to her generation.

Homonyms — do not merge. This 丁氏 is not Lady Ding (丁夫人, Đinh Phu Nhân), Cao Cao’s first principal wife who raised Cao Ang and was discarded after Wancheng (197) — a separate woman with her own page when published. She is not Ding Yuan (丁原, Đinh Nguyên), the Luoyang officer slain by Lü Bu. She is not Ding Feng (丁奉, Đinh Phụng) of Eastern Wu. Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 1 (Three Heroes Swear Brotherhood in the Peach Garden): Before the Yellow Turban war reaches its height, the narrator introduces Cao Cao’s pedigree — adoptive grandson of Cao Teng, son of Cao Song Jugao, original Xiahou surname in the novel’s rumor. The mother is never named and has no spoken line. Her literary presence is structural: the Qiao household from which the saga’s central antagonist emerges.

Chapter 10 (Cao Cao Avenges His Father): Zhang Kai murders Cao Song and Cao De on the Xu road. Cao Cao’s rage and the slaughter that follows are the novel’s domestic consequence for the Song line. Madam Ding is not on stage; the chapter is still hers as widow of the dead Grand Commandant.
