Biography & Historical Record

Emperor Guangwu of Han (汉光武帝刘秀, 5 BC–57 AD), personal name Liu Xiu (刘秀), courtesy name Wenshu (文叔), was the celebrated restorer and founding emperor of the Eastern Han dynasty. A ninth-generation descendant of Emperor Gaozu (Liu Bang), he rose from Nanyang during the collapse of Wang Mang’s Xin dynasty.

In 23 AD, Liu Xiu achieved one of the most legendary tactical triumphs in Chinese military history at the Battle of Kunyang, obliterating Wang Mang’s grand army of 420,000 with merely several thousand elite cavalry. Claiming the imperial throne in 25 AD, Emperor Guangwu systematically reunited China through military genius combined with unprecedented leniency, founding the Eastern Han era known as the Guangwu Restoration (光武中兴). His lineage formed the imperial ancestry of prominent Three Kingdoms statesmen including Liu Ye and Liu Yu.
