Life and Legacy of Empress Zhangshi
Empress Zhangshi (Lady Zhang) was an imperial consort of Shu Han and the younger daughter of the legendary general Zhang Fei. Following the demise of her elder sister, Empress Jing’ai, she entered the imperial palace and was formally crowned as the second empress consort of Emperor Liu Shan. Her royal marriage played an essential role in maintaining political harmony and cementing ties between the imperial Liu clan and the founding military nobility during the Three Kingdoms period.
Biography and Historical Records
According to historical documentation in the Records of the Three Kingdoms by Chen Shou, she was recruited into the royal household as an honorable consort in 237 AD before ascending to the rank of empress in 238 AD. Throughout her reign alongside Liu Shan, she represented stability inside the inner court. When the forces of Cao Wei overran Chengdu in 263 AD, she accompanied the abdicated emperor into exile at Luoyang, where she spent her final years with dignity.
