Zang Quan: Wei General & Grandson of Veteran Commander Zang Ba
Biography & Historical Record
Zang Quan (臧权, Tang Quyền) was a military general and noble of Cao Wei (Tào Ngụy) during the Three Kingdoms period. He was the son of General Zang Ai (臧艾, Tang Ngải) and the grandson of the renowned veteran general Zang Ba (臧霸, Tang Bá / Tuyên Cao), who had famously governed the Mount Tai (Taishan) and Xuzhou regions as an autonomous ally and senior general under Cao Cao. The Zang clan commanded fierce regional loyalty among the hardy mountain troops of Qingzhou and Xuzhou, serving as Wei’s unyielding eastern shield against Eastern Wu.
Following the distinguished military service of his father Zang Ai, who held the post of General Who Conquers the East, Zang Quan inherited the family’s martial command. Known for his tactical boldness and steadfast defense of the Huai River frontier, Zang Quan fought in numerous border engagements against Wu raids, ensuring that the fortified eastern marches of Wei remained unassailable throughout the reigns of Cao Fang, Cao Mao, and Cao Huan.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the generals of Taishan—founded by Zang Ba—are celebrated for their indomitable battlefield resilience:
“Zang Ba’s valiant warriors once swept through Xuzhou and Qingzhou; his sons and grandsons kept watch upon the Huai River ramparts, turning back every southern assault.”
Zang Quan represents the enduring legacy of Cao Cao’s frontier wardens who protected northern China’s coastline against the naval power of Sun Quan.
