Biography & Historical Record

Zang Ai (臧艾, Tang Ngải) was the son and heir of Zang Ba (臧霸, Tang Bá), styled Xuangao (宣高, Tuyên Cao), the Taishan warlord who became supreme commander of Qingzhou and Xuzhou under Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). When Zang Ba died in the Huangchu era (220–226), Zang Ai inherited the Marquisate of Liangcheng (良成侯). Records praise his refined tastes and administrative charm; he served as Shaofu (Minister of the Imperial Household) and Administrator of Huangzhou (黄州刺史), continuing the Zang family’s transition from frontier bandit leadership to Wei court nobility.

His son Zang Quan (臧权, Tang Quyền) carried the line forward. Zang Ai does not speak in the novel — his fame rests on Sanguozhi enfeoffment and office notices tied to his father’s long service on the eastern front.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

General: Zang Ai does not appear in Luo Guanzhong’s novel. His father Zang Ba (臧霸, Tang Bá) is an eastern warlord who joins Cao Cao after Lu Bu’s fall and fights at Ruxu and Guangling; Zang Ai is attested only in Wei marquis succession and ministerial records after Zang Ba’s death.
