Biography & Historical Record
Xun Shu (荀淑, Tuân Thục), courtesy name Jibo (季和), was a legendary Eastern Han philosopher, educator, and statesman from Yingyin, Yingchuan Commandery. Celebrated as the venerable patriarch of the Yingchuan Xun clan, he was revered throughout northern China as “Shenjun” (Divine Lord, 神君) for his wisdom and foresight, and was hailed as the foremost of the “Four Virtuous Elders of Yingchuan”.
Xun Shu served as Governor of Dangtu and Langling, where his humane administration transformed local customs. He was the father of the famed “Eight Dragons of the Xun Clan” (荀氏八龙), including Xun Shuang (荀爽), and grandfather of Cao Cao’s supreme strategist Xun Yu (荀彧). His moral and philosophical teachings elevated the Yingchuan Xun family into one of the most intellectually influential aristocratic houses in Chinese history.
