The Legend of Xuan Zan in Water Margin

Xuan Zan is a memorable hero featured in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He is portrayed as a formidable warrior from the Northern Song Dynasty who ranked 40th among the 108 Stars of Destiny. Famously nicknamed the “Ugly Prince Consort” (丑郡马), he possessed a fearsome countenance with a pitch-black complexion, bulging eyes, and a bushy beard. Despite his monstrous appearance, he commanded profound martial skills, excelling in archery, swordsmanship, and military strategy.

Originally serving under Governor Liang Zhongshu in Daming Prefecture, he once won the hand of an imperial princess due to his superior archery. However, she tragically died of grief over his grotesque looks, leaving him overlooked in the imperial court. His fortunes shifted when he recommended Guan Sheng to suppress the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh. Following their capture in battle, Xuan Zan pledged allegiance to Song Jiang and joined the Liangshan brotherhood as a vanguard cavalry leader.
