Biography & Historical Record

Xiahou Zhuang (夏侯庄, Hạ Hầu Trang), courtesy name Zhongrong (仲容), was a prominent nobleman, civil official, and imperial in-law of the Western Jin Dynasty. He was the son of Xiahou Wei (夏侯威), younger brother of Xiahou Jun (夏侯骏), and grandson of the legendary grand general Xiahou Yuan (夏侯渊).

Celebrated for his upright character, classical elegance, and diplomatic tact, Xiahou Zhuang served with distinction as the Administrator of Huainan (Huainan Taishou / 淮南太守). He married Lady Yang, a daughter of the influential imperial in-law Yang Zhen (uncle of Empress Yang Yan). Xiahou Zhuang is of paramount historical significance as the father of Xiahou Guangji (夏侯光姬 / Empress Dowager Gonghuai), who became the consort of Sima Jin (Prince of Langya) and the biological mother of Emperor Yuan of Jin (Sima Duì / 司马睿) — the founding emperor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Through Xiahou Zhuang, the bloodline of Xiahou Yuan directly founded the southern imperial dynasty that preserved Chinese civilization at Jiankang.

Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles

“The glory of the Xiahou clan did not end with Cao Wei; through Xiahou Zhuang’s daughter, the noble blood of Xiahou Yuan gave birth to Emperor Yuan of Jin, anchoring the throne of the South across a hundred years.”
— Book of Jin (Annals of Emperor Yuan)

In dynastic histories of the Jin Dynasty, Xiahou Zhuang stands as the genealogical bridge uniting Cao Wei’s foremost martial house with the imperial founders of Eastern Jin.
