Wang Xia

Biography & Historical Record

Wang Xia (王瑕, Vương Hà) was an imperial scholar-official and nobleman of the Western Jin Dynasty. He was the fifth son of Grand Tutor Wang Xiang (王祥, Vương Tường — Duke of Suiping) and brother to Wang Lie (王烈), Wang Fen (王芬), Wang Zhao (王昭), and Wang Fu (王副).

Brought up amidst the strict Confucian moral discipline and filial atmosphere of the Langya Wang clan, Wang Xia was renowned for his quiet modesty, love of historical literature, and avoidance of court extravagance. Serving as an attendant gentleman in the imperial administration during the reign of Emperor Wu of Jin (Sima Yan), Wang Xia upheld his father’s sacred deathbed instructions, which commanded his offspring to reject ostentatious funerals, avoid unrighteous wealth, and cultivate inner purity.
