Biography & Historical Record

Wang Zhao (王昭, Vương Chiêu), courtesy name Shuxiang (叔象), was a noble scholar and civil official of the Western Jin Dynasty. He was the son of the revered Grand Protector Wang Xiang (王祥, Vương Tường — Duke of Suiping and immortal paragon of filial piety) and Lady Duan (段氏), and brother to Wang Lie (王烈) and Wang Fen (王芬).

Raised within the austere, strictly moral environment of the Langya Wang clan in Linyi, Wang Zhao imbibed his father’s profound teachings on Confucian rectitude, frugality, and unblemished public conduct. Entering civil office during the reign of Emperor Wu of Jin (Sima Yan), Wang Zhao served as Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Sinong Cheng / 司农丞) and Gentleman of the Court (Chaoqing Daifu / 朝请大夫). In managing state granaries and imperial agricultural reserves, Wang Zhao was celebrated for his incorruptibility, refusing all personal gifts and setting a shining example of ministerial purity in a capital often intoxicated by aristocratic excess.

Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles

“The sons of Duke Suiping Wang Xiang preserved their father’s unadorned robes; Wang Zhao governed the granaries of Jin with clean hands and upright heart, never adding a grain of private wealth to his family estate.”
— Jin Records of Langya

In biographical traditions of the Western Jin, Wang Zhao exemplifies the hereditary filial integrity that transformed the Langya Wang lineage into the moral and political cornerstone of early medieval China.
