Sun Li: Biography and Origins
Sun Li, famously nicknamed “Sick Yuchi” after the legendary warrior Yuchi Gong, is a prominent military character in the classic epic Water Margin. Set against the historical backdrop of the Northern Song Dynasty, he begins his career as an accomplished imperial garrison commandant stationed in Dengzhou. Renowned for his martial mastery with the segmented iron mace and spear, he pairs physical strength with remarkable tactical intellect.
Role at Zhu Family Manor and Liangshan
His military trajectory shifted abruptly when his brother Sun Xin and sister-in-law Gu Dasao orchestrated a daring prison rescue for their wrongfully accused relatives, Xie Zhen and Xie Bao. Bound by strong familial loyalty, he chose to forsake his imperial post and throw his support behind the outlaw brotherhood.
Through these maneuvers, Sun Li proved indispensable during the capture of the heavily fortified Zhu Family Manor. Posing as an imperial officer dispatched to provide reinforcements, he gained the absolute trust of defensive instructor Luan Tingyu. Once positioned inside, he led a coordinated internal sabotage that caused the stronghold to collapse from within.
Upon ascending to the marsh stronghold, he was named the Earth Brave Star, ranking 39th among the 108 Liangshan heroes. Serving as a frontline cavalry officer, he demonstrated exceptional battlefield resilience across the imperial expeditions against rebel leaders. Unlike many comrades who perished in battle, he survived the brutal Fang La campaign and eventually returned to Dengzhou with an official pardon.
