Biography & Historical Record

Liu Pi (Yuan Shu) (刘辟 / 劉辟, Lưu Tịch) was a Yellow Turban remnant commander who migrated south after the 184 AD uprising, joined Ou Xing (区星, Âu Tinh) in Changsha, then entered the service of Yuan Shu (袁术, Viên Thuật). In 195 AD Yuan Shu sent him to ally with Runan–Yingchuan Yellow Turban leaders He Yi (何仪, Hà Nghi), Huang Shao (黄邵, Hoàng Thiệu), and He Man (何曼, Hà Mạn). At Shanyang Hill, Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo)’s army shattered the coalition: Dian Wei (典韦, Điển Vi) captured Liu Pi alive; Cao Cao ordered his execution. Do not confuse this post (/liu-pi-yuan-shu/, 汉字 刘辟) with other /liu-pi/ entries without checking the Chinese character and career arc.

Primary narrative sources are Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Ch. 12) and late-Han campaign notices that place Yuan Shu–aligned Yellow Turban remnants against Cao Cao in Yingchuan/Runan. No parents, spouse, or children are named in novel or history.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 12 (Tao Qian Thrice Offers Xuzhou to Liu Bei; Cao Cao Fights Lü Bu at Puyang): After earlier Yellow Turban dispersal and Ou Xing’s Changsha rising, Liu Pi serves Yuan Shu and joins He Yi, Huang Shao, and He Man. Cao Cao marches south; at Shanyang Hill Cao Hong (曹洪, Tào Hồng) kills He Man, Li Dian (李典, Lý Điển) captures Huang Shao, and Dian Wei overpowers and takes Liu Pi alive. Cao Cao executes Liu Pi — ending Yuan Shu’s allied Yellow Turban front in the Central Plains.
