Biography & Historical Record

Liu Deran was an Eastern Han scholar and imperial clan member from Zhuo County, Zhuo Commandery; son of Liu Yuanqi and first cousin of Liu Bei. Growing up in Louxiang village, Liu Deran shared an intimate bond of brotherhood with the young Liu Bei. When Liu Bei reached the age of fifteen, Liu Yuanqi provided equal funding for both Liu Deran and Liu Bei to travel to Luoyang to study under the renowned scholar and general Lu Zhi.

During their years in Master Lu Zhi’s academy, Liu Deran and Liu Bei forged deep friendships with fellow students, most notably Gongsun Zan of Liaoxi. While Liu Bei subsequently embarked upon a military career during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Liu Deran maintained the ancestral Confucian traditions of the Zhuo clan, managing local estates and offering logistical and moral support to the emerging Liu leadership in northern China.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Deran appears in Chapter 1 as the beloved cousin and study companion of Liu Bei, representing the harmonious scholarly kinship of the House of Liu.

“Studying the ancient odes beneath Master Lu Zhi’s gate, Deran and Xuande shared one carriage and one heart, binding the youth of Zhuo Commandery to an imperial horizon.”
