Lady Liu Yuanqi was the wife of Liu Yuanqi, a distinguished elder of the imperial Han clan in Zhuo Commandery; mother of Liu Deran and maternal aunt-in-law to Liu Bei. Living during the late Eastern Han dynasty in Louxiang village, Zhuo County, Lady Liu managed the ancestral household while her husband provided generous material support to the young, impoverished Liu Bei and his widowed mother.
According to historical records in the Sanguozhi, when Liu Yuanqi repeatedly diverted family funds to assist Liu Bei and pay for his education under the Confucian master Lu Zhi, Lady Liu questioned why he treated a nephew with such lavish generosity compared to their own children. Liu Yuanqi famously replied that this boy was no ordinary person and was destined to accomplish great deeds. Over the years, Lady Liu came to respect Liu Bei’s extraordinary filial devotion and helped foster harmonious relations among the young kin of the Zhuo clan.

In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the household of Liu Yuanqi is featured in Chapter 1 during the foundational youth of Liu Bei, underscoring the ancestral support that sustained the future founding emperor of Shu Han.
