Biography of Li Yun
Li Yun was originally a distinguished head constable in Yishui County during the Northern Song Dynasty. Renowned across the province for his martial prowess, blazing red beard, and piercing jade-tinted gaze, he earned the fearsome moniker “The Blue-Eyed Tiger.” His primary duty was maintaining law and order across perilous rural regions, executing his tasks with steadfast integrity and strict obedience to imperial justice.
When an outlaw disturbance threatened local stability, the disciplined officer was ordered to escort the notorious outlaw Li Kui to the prefectural capital. However, his former martial arts apprentice, Zhu Fu, conspired with marsh sympathizers to drug the officer’s meal during transit. Upon awakening to find his prisoner gone, the constable realized that returning to a merciless magistrate meant inevitable execution. Faced with betrayal and bureaucratic cruelty, he chose to forsake imperial service and join the mountain stronghold.
Literary Significance in Classic Literature
In the classic fourteenth-century Chinese epic Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan), the former officer embodies the tragic plight of righteous officials crushed by systemic corruption. Ranking 97th among the 108 Liangshan heroes and governed by the Earth Flight Star (Dìfēi Xīng), his journey illustrates how institutional decay compelled honorable public servants toward righteous rebellion. Within the outlaw enclave, he was entrusted with designing, building, and maintaining essential defensive architecture and fortified garrisons.
