Lady Zhang (张氏, Trương thị), formally honored as Consort Zhang (张妃) and posthumously as Lady Zhang of Harmony (和睦张夫人), was a prominent Eastern Wu noblewoman hailing from Pengcheng Commandery. She was the daughter of General of Resolute Might Zhang Cheng (张承, Trương Thừa), granddaughter of Wu founding chancellor Zhang Zhao (张昭, Trương Chiêu), and maternal granddaughter of Grand General Zhuge Jin (诸葛瑾, Gia Cát Cẩn). Through her illustrious parentage, Lady Zhang represented the convergence of two of Eastern Wu’s most influential bureaucratic and military dynasties.
Renowned for her refined upbringing, virtue, and gentle character, Lady Zhang was chosen to become the principal consort of Crown Prince Sun He (孙和, Tôn Hòa), the beloved third son of Emperor Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền). During the bitter political struggle known as the Succession Struggle of the Two Palaces (二宫之争), her family—including her uncle Zhang Xiu (张休) and maternal uncle Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪)—steadfastly supported Crown Prince Sun He against the faction of the Prince of Lu, Sun Ba. Despite her husband being eventually deposed following court intrigues orchestrated by Princess Sun Luban (全公主), Lady Zhang remained devoted and stood by Sun He through his exile to Xindu.
Her younger sister, also known as Lady Zhang, married Grand General Lu Kang (陆抗, Lục Kháng)—the son of Imperial Chancellor Lu Xun (陆逊)—and gave birth to prominent military commanders Lu Yan (陆晏) and Lu Jing (陆景). Following Sun He’s forced death in 253 AD, Lady Zhang’s stepson Sun Hao (孙皓) eventually ascended the throne in 264 AD as the fourth and final emperor of Eastern Wu. Emperor Sun Hao posthumously elevated Lady Zhang with imperial honors, memorializing her role in the royal court.
