Lady Wu was the wife of the influential Eastern Han Chief of the Palace Attendants Cao Teng; adoptive mother of Grand Commandant Cao Song and adoptive grandmother of Cao Cao. Hailing from a distinguished gentry lineage in Pei State, Lady Wu managed the vast ancestral households and charity foundations of the Cao clan in Qiao County and the imperial capital Luoyang.
During Cao Teng’s thirty years of imperial service under four emperors, Lady Wu was praised for her dignified domestic management, modest lifestyle, and generous patronage of orphan scholars and impoverished clan dependents. Following the rise of the Cao Wei dynasty in 220 AD, Emperor Wen (Cao Pi) posthumously honored Cao Teng as Emperor Gao (高皇帝) and conferred upon Lady Wu the imperial posthumous title of Empress Gao (高皇后), making her the only wife of a eunuch chancellor in Chinese history to be formally consecrated with imperial empress rites in the imperial ancestral temple.
