Biography & Historical Record

Lady Huyan (呼延氏, Hô Diên thị) was a noble Xiongnu royal consort belonging to the aristocratic Huyan clan (呼延部), one of the four most prestigious noble tribes of the Southern Xiongnu Confederation (alongside Luanti, Xubu, and Qiulin). Renowned for her regal nobility, intelligence, and diplomatic poise, she became the principal consort of Liu Bao (刘豹, Lưu Báo), the Right Worthy Prince of the Xiongnu (Youxianwang).

Lady Huyan gave birth to Liu Yuan (刘渊, Lưu Uyên), who grew up to become the founder and first Emperor of the Han-Zhao dynasty (Han state of the Sixteen Kingdoms). Legend recorded in official chronicles relates that prior to Liu Yuan’s birth, Lady Huyan dreamed of a majestic divine dragon that coiled about her person, an omen celebrated across the northern steppe. Living alongside Liu Bao’s other consort, the famed Han poetess Cai Yan (蔡琰, Cai Wenji), Lady Huyan fostered an environment that blended steppe martial prowess with Han classical governance, profoundly shaping her son’s historical trajectory.

“Liu Yuan’s mother, Lady Huyan, dreamed that a divine dragon descended from the heavens and rested upon her. Soon she conceived, giving birth to Liu Yuan, whose physical marks and intellect astounded the tribal elders.”
— Book of Jin (Jin Shu), Annals of Liu Yuanhai
