The Legend of Kong Ming in Water Margin

Kong Ming (孔明), nicknamed the Comet Star (毛头星), is a memorable outlaw featured prominently in the classic Chinese literary masterpiece Water Margin. Although he shares his personal name with the celebrated Three Kingdoms tactician Zhuge Liang, this fierce warrior exhibits a radically different persona defined by martial vigor and a quick temper. Originating in folk traditions and chronicles depicting the Northern Song Dynasty, he embodies the rebellious spirit of the Liangshan heroes, occupying the sixty-second seat among the 108 stars as the Earth Mad Star.

Mount Qingfeng and Outlaw Operations

Before answering the call of the grand marsh stronghold, Kong Ming ruled over the Mount Qingfeng garrison alongside his younger brother, Kong Liang. Together, the siblings maintained regional supremacy and defended their mountain haven with unyielding force. Their lives changed permanently when a tense misunderstanding led to the capture of the wandering magistrate Song Jiang. Upon discovering the captive’s venerable identity, the brothers released him immediately, treated him with immense hospitality, and swore an oath of eternal fidelity to his righteous cause.

Chapter 32

Lord of Qingfeng Mountain

The brothers host Song Jiang at their estate, eagerly receiving instruction in martial philosophy before local disputes escalate into open rebellion against oppressive regional magistrates.

Chapter 58

Ascent to Liangshan

Following intensive combat at the siege of Qingzhou, the brothers formally merge their forces with the grand outlaw coalition under Chao Gai and Song Jiang.

Key Alliances and Final Campaigns

During the imperial campaigns to suppress rebel uprisings across the realm, Kong Ming served courageously as an infantry leader. His story is defined by three enduring personal associations:

  • Kong Liang: His trusted younger sibling; the inseparable duo coordinated defenses, shared command duties, and fought side by side throughout numerous dangerous engagements.
  • Song Jiang: His revered benefactor and overall commander, whose guidance transformed the wild mountain lords into disciplined defenders of honor.
  • Hua Rong: The legendary master archer who provided combat mentorship and tactical instruction to the brothers during their foundational training years.

In the tragic final campaign against the southern rebel state of Fang La, he contracted a fatal disease while stationed on garrison duty, leaving a lasting legacy as one of Liangshan’s most dedicated defenders.
