Biography & Historical Record of Jiang Jing

Jiang Jing (蒋敬) is a memorable hero in the classic Chinese epic Water Margin. Originally an educated scholar who repeatedly failed the imperial civil service examinations, he grew disillusioned with the pervasive corruption across the Northern Song Dynasty. Blessed with astonishing mathematical prowess and rapid abacus calculations, he earned the famous moniker “Divine Calculator” (Shen Suan Zi). When he united with the Liangshan band, his acute financial mind quickly made him indispensable as the grand supervisor of supplies, accounting, and resource allocation.

Role and Logistical Mastery in Liangshan

“With an abacus in hand, the treasury was never depleted; with an unerring calculation of provisions, the great host never faced famine.”

Managing the daily needs of 108 chieftains and thousands of soldiers required tremendous organizational discipline. He kept track of treasury stores, captured plunder, rations, and armaments. Following the royal amnesty, he accompanied the Liangshan forces on treacherous campaigns against the Liao kingdom and various rebel factions, maintaining crucial supply lines throughout intense warfare. Unlike many chieftains who perished in the bloody Fang La expedition, he survived uninjured. Declining prestigious bureaucratic appointments from the imperial court, he chose a tranquil civilian life in Tan Prefecture, using his commercial and mathematical talents to prosper as a peaceful citizen.
