Biography & Historical Record
Huang Kui (黄奎, Hoàng Khuê) on /huang-kui-2/ is the fictional Xuchang courtier of Luo Guanzhong’s Chapters 57–58 — son of the historical Grand Commandant Huang Wan (黄琬, Hoàng Uyển), Palace Attendant (门下侍郎) under Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo), and Ma Teng’s partner in the failed review-day assassination. He is not Huangfu Kui (皇甫闓). The August 28 post /huang-kui/ (id 21214) is the same literary man; this page does not replace that URL. Treat the two slugs as twins, not as two officers.
Chen Shou never gives Ma Teng a co-conspirator named Huang Kui. History has Ma Teng summoned to the capital and later killed; the novel invents a righteous son of Huang Wan, a leaking concubine, and a market-wide execution to explain why Ma Chao (马超, Mã Siêu) then explodes at Tong Pass.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 57: Cao Cao sends Huang Kui into Ma Teng’s camp as a staff officer of comfort. Huang Kui opens his hatred: Huang Wan died in the Li Jue (李傕, Lý Thôi)–Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ) sack, and he now sees Cao as the new Dong Zhuo. He and Ma Teng (马腾, Mã Đằng) agree to strike at Cao’s troop review.
Chapter 58: Concubine Li Chunxiang (李春香, Lý Xuân Hương) teases the secret out; Miao Ze (苗泽, Miêu Trạch) sells it. Cao ambushes the review. Ma Teng, Ma Xiu (马休, Mã Hưu), and Huang Kui are bound and beheaded. Cao then kills Miao Ze, Li Chunxiang, and Huang Kui’s household in the market. Ma Chao opens the Tong Pass war.
