Hua Xiong (华雄, Hoa Hùng) (d. 191 or 190 AD in the usual dating) was a vanguard commander under Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) in the campaign against the Guandong coalition. The novel makes him the terror of Sishui Pass (汜水关, ải Tị Thủy): he cuts down coalition officers until Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) rides out and returns with the head before a cup of wine cools. The historical notices say the opposite about the killer — Hua Xiong died under Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên)‘s attack, recorded in Sun Jian’s Sanguozhi biography and Pei Songzhi’s annotations, not in a Guan Yu duel. Both deaths belong on this page.

Biography & Historical Record

Little is preserved about Hua Xiong’s ancestry or courtesy name. The chronicles place him among Dong Zhuo’s western officers during the war that followed the coalition of 190. Sun Jian, then allied with Yuan Shu (袁术, Viên Thuật) and driving toward Luoyang, defeated Dong Zhuo’s force at Yangren (阳人, Dương Nhân). In that fighting Sun Jian’s men killed Chief Controller Hua Xiong (都督华雄). The notice is brief: no nine-foot stature, no warm-wine duel, no roll of named victims. Guan Yu is not mentioned. That is the historical death.

The novel relocates and enlarges him. Luo Guanzhong stations Hua Xiong at Sishui Pass as Dong Zhuo’s champion against the eighteen lords. He becomes the obstacle that lets the narrative introduce Guan Yu as more than Liu Bei’s horse-archer. Later Dong Zhuo officers such as Li Jue (李僖, Lý Thôi) and Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ) inherit the western remnant after Dong Zhuo’s fall; they are the same faction world, not Hua Xiong’s recorded kin or later colleagues in the field — he is already dead in both tellings before Chang’an’s 192 crisis.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 5 (Sending Out the Call, Cao Cao Mustering Volunteers; Destroying the Enemy, the Three Brothers Fight Lü Bu): The eighteen-lord coalition gathers; Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) sits as alliance leader. Sun Jian takes the vanguard toward Sishui. Bao Xin (鲍信, Bào Tín)‘s brother Bao Zhong (鲍忠, Bào Trung) rides out without orders; Hua Xiong meets him and cuts him down, sending the first shock through the allied camp. Sun Jian then advances. In the melee Hua Xiong presses hard; Zu Mao (祖茂, Tổ Mậu), courtesy name Dafei (大飞, Đại Phi), takes Sun Jian’s red turban to draw the pursuit. Versions differ on Zu Mao’s end: many recensions have him wounded or escaping after hanging the turban on a post as a decoy; others have Hua Xiong find him in the wood and cut him down. Yuan Shu, jealous, withholds grain from Sun Jian; the vanguard falls back. Hua Xiong then comes to the coalition front and calls for champions. Yu She (俞涉, Du Thiệp), a general under Yuan Shu, rides out and is slain. Han Fu (韩馥, Hàn Phức) offers Pan Feng (潘凤, Phan Phụng) with his great axe; Hua Xiong kills him in short order. Yuan Shao laments that his own champions Yan Liang and Wen Chou are not present, and looks down on volunteers of low rank. Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) asks whether anyone in camp will go. Guan Yu, then listed as a horse-archer under Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị), steps forward. Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu scoff. Cao Cao has a cup of heated wine poured. Guan Yu tells them to hold it: he will return. He rides to Sishui, meets Hua Xiong, and comes back with the head. The wine is still warm. That scene founds Guan Yu’s early fame; it is the novel’s death of Hua Xiong, not the historical one.

Hua Xiong (华雄, Hoa Hùng) — Historical & Literary Timeline

190–191 AD — Coalition war

Dong Zhuo’s western officer

Serves Dong Zhuo against the Guandong alliance. History places him in the Yangren fighting under the Sun Jian campaign, not as a long independent warlord.

Novel Chapter 5 — Sishui Pass

Champion of the pass

Kills Bao Zhong; presses Sun Jian; Zu Mao uses the red-turban ruse (escaped/wounded in some tellings, slain in others); slays Yu She and Pan Feng before the allied tent. Yuan Shao underestimates Guan Yu; Cao Cao offers the wine.

Novel Chapter 5 — Warm wine

Death by Guan Yu (literary)

Guan Yu rides from Liu Bei’s modest place in camp, beheads Hua Xiong, and drinks the wine still hot. This is the famous novel death — not attested in the chronicles.

191 AD — Yangren (阳人)

Death under Sun Jian (historical)

Sanguozhi Sun Jian biography / Pei: Sun Jian defeats Dong Zhuo’s army at Yangren and kills Chief Controller Hua Xiong. No Guan Yu duel. Report this beside the novel, never instead of it.

Key Relationships

Family

  • No kin recorded in the novel or in the standard historical notices — no named father, mother, spouse, or children. Do not invent a clan to fill the box.

Friends

  • Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) — Lord who stations Hua Xiong as the Sishui / western vanguard against the coalition. Both novel and history agree on this allegiance.
  • Li Ru (李儒, Lý Nho) — Dong Zhuo’s chief adviser in the same camp-world of 190–191; not a sworn brother, but a fellow pillar of the Dong regime while Hua Xiong holds the pass.

Enemies

  • Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) — Novel: slays Hua Xiong at Sishui and returns before Cao Cao’s wine cools (Ch. 5). History: not the killer; Guan Yu is not credited with this death in SGZ.
  • Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên) — History: his army kills Hua Xiong at Yangren (SGZ Sun Jian / Pei). Novel: vanguard opponent at Sishui; Hua Xiong first breaks Sun Jian’s probe after Bao Zhong’s death and the Zu Mao ruse.
  • Bao Zhong (鲍忠, Bào Trung) — Bao Xin’s brother; rides out without orders and is killed by Hua Xiong (Ch. 5).
  • Zu Mao (祖茂, Tổ Mậu) — Sun Jian’s officer; red-turban decoy. Escaped or wounded in some tellings; slain after the hanging-turban ruse in others.
  • Yu She (俞涉, Du Thiệp) — Yuan Shu’s general; sent out from the allied tent and killed (Ch. 5).
  • Pan Feng (潘凤, Phan Phụng) — Han Fu’s axe-general; killed by Hua Xiong immediately after Yu She, deepening the camp’s panic.

Other

  • Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) — Coalition leader who mourns the absence of Yan Liang and Wen Chou and treats Guan Yu as too low-ranked to ride — the foil that makes Cao Cao’s wine-offer possible.
  • Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) — Pours the heated wine for Guan Yu and backs the challenge when Yuan Shao sneers. The warm cup is the novel’s clock for Hua Xiong’s death.
  • Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) — Guan Yu’s sworn elder brother in camp; Hua Xiong’s novel slayer rides from Liu Bei’s modest place among the eighteen lords, not from a separate command.
  • The eighteen-lord camp — The Guandong alliance facing Sishui: Yuan Shao as leader, Yuan Shu holding supplies, Han Fu offering Pan Feng, Sun Jian in the van, Cao Cao as the lord who will use talent regardless of rank.
  • Sishui Pass (汜水关, ải Tị Thủy) — Novel battlefield and the gate Hua Xiong holds. Historical death is associated with Yangren in Sun Jian’s campaign, not with a named Sishui duel.
  • Yuan Shu (袁术, Viên Thuật) — Withholds grain from Sun Jian and later sends Yu She; his spite shapes the Sishui sequence as much as Hua Xiong’s blade.
  • Han Fu (韩馥, Hàn Phức) — Offers Pan Feng as the next champion after Yu She falls.
  • Li Jue (李僖, Lý Thôi) and Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ) — Fellow Dong Zhuo western officers of the same generation; they dominate Chang’an after 192, after Hua Xiong is already dead in both novel and history.
  • Hu Zhen (胡轸, Hồ Chẩn) — Dong Zhuo officer in the Sun Jian fighting (historical Yangren / novel adjacent); useful context for the real campaign in which Hua Xiong dies.

Chapter 5

In History

Summary

  • Hua Xiong (华雄, Hoa Hùng) was a military officer under Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác). Ancestry and family are not recorded. He is not given a long independent command in the chronicles.

Year: 190–191 AD

  • Fought in Dong Zhuo's war against the Guandong coalition. Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên) defeated Dong Zhuo's force at Yangren (阳人) and killed Chief Controller Hua Xiong (都督华雄).

Novel vs History — death

  • History: slain by Sun Jian's troops (SGZ Sun Jian biography / Pei Songzhi). Novel Ch. 5: slain by Guan Yu at Sishui, wine still warm, after Bao Zhong, Zu Mao, Yu She, and Pan Feng. Do not collapse the two accounts.

Historical Record

  • Sanguozhi (Wu) Sun Jian biography; Pei Songzhi annotations on the Yangren victory. Guan Yu's warm-wine duel is Luo Guanzhong's invention and is not in the core chronicle. Sishui Pass as Hua Xiong's personal stage is likewise novelistic geography.
