Hu Cheng (扈成, Hỗ Thành; nickname ‘Flying Tiger’ / 飞天虎), was the eldest son of Master Hu and elder brother of the warrior maiden Hu Sanniang (Ten Feet of Steel) in the epic novel Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan). He was the young master of the fortified Hu Family Manor on Lone Dragon Ridge.
Renowned for agile horsemanship and tactical prudence, Hu Cheng sought to protect his clan amidst the ferocious war between Liangshan and the neighboring Zhu Manor. When his sister Hu Sanniang was captured in battle by Lin Chong, Hu Cheng immediately rode alone to Song Jiang’s camp, offering a treaty of non-aggression and promising to assist Liangshan in exchange for his sister’s safety. Fulfilling his pledge, when the defeated warlord Zhu Biao fled the burning Zhu manor, Hu Cheng personally ambushed Zhu Biao, tied him with ropes, and rode toward Liangshan’s lines to deliver him.
Tragically, on the road he encountered Black Whirlwind Li Kui, who was slaughtering everything in his path. Li Kui instantly chopped the bound Zhu Biao in half and charged at Hu Cheng with his twin axes. Seeing that Li Kui was uncontrollable, Hu Cheng turned his steed and galloped into the wilderness, narrowly escaping with his life while Li Kui butchered his entire remaining family. Hu Cheng made his way to the distant northwestern frontier at Yan’an, where his military talents earned him appointment as an imperial cavalry officer under Grand Commandant Tong Guan.

Chapter 50 (Wu Yong Employs the Twin Scheme; Black Whirlwind Slaughter the Hu Manor): Hu Cheng binds Zhu Biao and rides to deliver him to Song Jiang. Li Kui leaps out and hacks Zhu Biao apart, swinging his axes at Hu Cheng’s chest. Hu Cheng wheels his horse around and spurs him at full gallop, vanishing into the hills.
