Biography & Historical Record
Guo Kui (郭隗, Quách Ngỗi) was a prominent strategist and advisor during the Warring States period of China. He is primarily remembered for his pivotal role in the resurgence of the State of Yan (燕, Yên) under the reign of King Zhao of Yan (燕昭王, Yên Chiêu Vương). His most famous historical contribution is the anecdote concerning the ‘Horse Bones’ (千金买骨), which served as a masterstroke of political branding.
When King Zhao sought to restore the prestige of Yan following the devastating invasion by the State of Qi (齐, Tề), he asked Guo Kui how to attract talented individuals to his court. Guo Kui famously recounted a story about a king who spent 500 gold pieces to purchase the bones of a dead千里马 (thousand-li horse). By honoring the bones, the king signaled such sincerity that living, superior horses were brought to him within a year. Guo Kui advised King Zhao: ‘If you wish to attract talent, begin by honoring me. If the world sees that a person as mediocre as I am is treated with such respect, they will conclude that the King is truly thirsty for talent and will flock to Yan.’
King Zhao followed this counsel, building a lavish residence for Guo Kui and treating him as a teacher. Consequently, brilliant figures such as Yue Yi (乐毅, Nhạc Nghị), Zou Yan (邹衍, Trâu Diễn), and Ju Xin (剧辛, Kịch Tân) arrived in Yan, eventually enabling the state to launch a retaliatory campaign that nearly annihilated the State of Qi.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Guo Kui is a figure of the Warring States period and does not appear as a character in the narrative of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his strategy remains a classic historical archetype often referenced by scholars and strategists in the later era. He represents the epitome of ‘virtuous recruitment,’ a standard against which the lords of the Three Kingdoms, such as Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) seeking Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng), are often measured.
