Biography & Historical Record
Ju Xin (剧辛, Kịch Tân) was a prominent general and strategist of the State of Yan during the late Warring States period. He is historically recognized for his intellectual rivalry and military interactions with some of the most influential figures of his era. Ju Xin initially spent time in the State of Zhao, where he developed a close friendship with the legendary strategist Pang Nuan (庞暖, Bàng Noãn). They spent years discussing military theory, statecraft, and the art of war. During his tenure in Zhao, Ju Xin earned a reputation as a man of wisdom and deep strategic insight.
Later, Ju Xin defected to the State of Yan, where he was highly esteemed by King Xi of Yan (燕王喜, Yên Vương Hỷ). Relying on the erroneous belief that Pang Nuan (庞暖, Bàng Noãn) was merely an aging scholar who lacked practical command experience, King Xi of Yan appointed Ju Xin to lead a massive campaign against the State of Zhao in 242 BC. Despite his reputation, Ju Xin was outmaneuvered by his former friend. The campaign ended in a catastrophic defeat for Yan; Ju Xin was killed in action, and his army suffered the loss of 20,000 soldiers. His death marked a significant decline in the military prestige of the State of Yan during the final decades before the Qin unification.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Ju Xin is a historical figure from the Warring States period and does not appear as a character in the narrative of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his life and eventual defeat serve as a cautionary tale frequently cited in military treatises and historical analogies regarding the dangers of underestimating one’s opponent based on past personal knowledge.
