Empress Dou (窦妙, Đậu Miệu; d. 172; posthumously Empress Huansi 桓思皇后), native of Fufeng, was the third empress of Emperor Huan of Han and Empress Dowager during the early reign of Emperor Ling (Emperor Ling). She was the daughter of Grand General Dou Wu (窦武) and great-granddaughter of founding general Dou Rong.
Following Emperor Huan’s death in 168 without a direct heir, Empress Dowager Dou and her father Dou Wu selected the twelve-year-old Liu Hong (Emperor Ling) to ascend the throne, assuming regency as Empress Dowager. Collaborating with revered Grand Tutor Chen Fan (陈蕃), Dou Wu and Empress Dowager Dou launched a historic campaign to exterminate the corrupt palace eunuch clique led by Cao Jie (曹节) and Wang Fu (王甫) that was choking the imperial court.
However, Empress Dowager Dou hesitated to execute the eunuchs en masse, allowing Cao Jie to mount a violent midnight counter-coup. Holding the juvenile Emperor Ling hostage, the eunuchs surrounded Dou Wu and Chen Fan, forcing Dou Wu to commit suicide and butchering their families. Empress Dowager Dou was stripped of all regency powers and placed under severe house arrest in the Southern Palace’s Cloud Terrace (Nangong Yuntai), where she was denied basic imperial amenities until her tragic death in 172.
