Cai Leng (蔡棱, Thái Lăng; c. 100s–c. 150s AD) was a Confucian scholar and respected gentry patriarch of the Eastern Han dynasty, hailing from Yu County in Chenliu Commandery. He served as a regional official and was renowned in Henan for his upright personal character and dedication to classical learning.
Cai Leng was the father of the preeminent scholar, calligrapher, and musician Cai Yong (蔡邕), and the paternal grandfather of immortal poetess Cai Yan (Cai Wenji). Cai Leng passed away while Cai Yong was young, but his profound pedagogical standards and library of classical canons established the intellectual foundation for Cai Yong’s rise as the foremost intellectual of the late Han era.
