The Tragic Fate of Zhuge Shang

Zhuge Shang was a noble officer of Shu Han during the late Three Kingdoms period. As the eldest son of imperial general Zhuge Zhan and the grandson of Chancellor Zhuge Liang, he carried an illustrious family lineage. When Wei general Deng Ai launched a daring cross-mountain invasion in 263 AD, Shu Han faced mortal danger. Alongside his father, the young warrior marched to defend the strategic outpost of Mianzhu Pass.

Recognizing the internal corruption of the court and realizing the pass was surrounded, he lamented that failing to eliminate internal traitors and halt the enemy left him no reason to live. Refusing surrender, he charged headlong into the advancing enemy lines and sacrificed his life in a blaze of glory.

In Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhuge Shang is portrayed as a valiant youth who successfully repels Wei vanguard units in personal combat.
