Zhong Hao

Biography & Historical Record

Zhong Hao (钟皓, Chung Hạo) was a renowned scholar-gentry patriarch and virtuous recluse of the Eastern Han dynasty from Changshe, Yingchuan Commandery. He was celebrated alongside Xun Shu (荀淑), Chen Shi (陈寔), and Han Shao (韩韶) as one of the legendary “Four Virtuous Elders of Yingchuan” (颍川四长). Renowned for his classical knowledge, incorruptibility, and refusal to compromise with sycophantic court eunuchs, Zhong Hao repeatedly declined high ministerial summons, preferring to educate disciples in his hometown.

Zhong Hao’s moral stature laid the grand cultural foundation for the Yingchuan Zhong clan, which later produced supreme calligrapher and Grand Tutor Zhong Yao (钟繇), chancellor Zhong Yu (钟毓), and the brilliant general Zhong Hui (钟会) who conquered Shu Han.
