Biography & Historical Record

Zhen Yi (甄逸, Chân Dật; c. 140s–c. 186 AD) was an Eastern Han civil official and patriarch of the eminent Zhen clan of Wuji in Zhongshan Commandery. A descendant of Han prime minister Zhen Han, Zhen Yi served the imperial court with distinction, holding the administrative post of Magistrate of Shangcai (上蔡令) in Runan Commandery.

Married to Lady Zhang of Changshan, Zhen Yi was blessed with three sons and five daughters. His fifth and youngest daughter, Empress Wenzhao (Zhenji / Lady Zhen), became legendary as one of the supreme beauties of Chinese history, first marrying Yuan Xi and later becoming primary consort to Cao Pi (曹丕) and mother of Emperor Ming, Cao Rui (曹叡).

Zhen Yi died early when Zhenji was only three years old. When Cao Rui ascended the imperial throne of Cao Wei, he posthumously honored his grandfather Zhen Yi with the grand titles of Grand Commandant (太尉) and Duke of Anfeng (安丰侯).
