Zhao Yuan (赵安 / 赵远, Triệu Viễn / Triệu An) was a noble gentleman of Jiuquan Commandery in Liangzhou during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the father of the famed heroine Zhao E (赵娥, Triệu Nga / Lady Pang of Jiuquan) and grandfather of Wei general Pang Yu (庞淯).
Zhao Yuan was killed in a local feud by Li Shou, an influential bully of the same commandery. Following the death of his sons to epidemic disease, his daughter Zhao E took up arms in filial vengeance, assassinating Li Shou in broad daylight before turning herself in to the authorities. Zhao Yuan’s memory was forever honored through his daughter’s historic act of filial devotion, which became celebrated throughout China and recorded in official dynastic histories.
