Biography & Historical Record
Yu Jin (于禁, Vu Cấm) (?–221 AD), courtesy name Wenze (文则, Văn Tắc), was one of Cao Cao’s (曹操, Tào Tháo) most disciplined senior generals—grouped among the elite commanders who built Wei’s early armies. A native of Juping in Taishan, he enforced order even in disaster: at Wancheng he holds the rear while Qingzhou troops riot, earning Cao Cao’s lasting trust.
In the Borrowing Arrows arc the novel makes him joint naval commander with Mao Jie (毛玠, Mao Giới) after Cai Mao (蔡瑁, Sái Mạo) and Zhang Yun (张允, Trương Doãn) are executed—ordering endless volleys into Zhuge Liang’s fog-shrouded straw fleet. His historical tragedy comes later: at Fancheng (219) his army is flooded and he surrenders to Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ); returned under Cao Pi (曹丕, Tào Phi), he dies of illness and shame in 221 after seeing murals that damn his surrender.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Yu Jin’s novel career spans Cao Cao’s rise—Yanzhou, Puyang, Guandu, the southern push—then the humiliation of Fan Castle. At Red Cliffs (Ch. 46) he is the inland general miscast as a river admiral: drums and arrows into mist, never daring to launch boats, handing Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) a hundred thousand shafts.
