Yan Poxi (阎婆惜, Diêm Bà Tích), is one of the pivotal dramatic figures in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan), the concubine of Liangshan Grand Chieftain Song Jiang whose greed, betrayal, and blackmail triggered Song Jiang’s flight into outlaw rebellion.

Originally a singing girl from Tokyo (Kaifeng), Yan Poxi arrived in Yuncheng with her parents seeking relatives, only for her father to die of illness in a flophouse. Lacking money for a coffin, her mother Old Mother Yan begged for charity on the street. Song Jiang, renowned as ‘Welcome Rain’ (及第雨), generously paid for the funeral and coffin and bought the family a comfortable two-story townhouse. Out of gratitude, Old Mother Yan urged Song Jiang to take the nineteen-year-old Yan Poxi as his concubine.

However, Song Jiang was a disciplined clerk who preferred martial arts and charity over feminine charms, rarely visiting her bedchamber. Frustrated, Yan Poxi took a passionate lover, Song Jiang’s handsome junior clerk Zhang Wenyuan (张文远). One morning, Song Jiang inadvertently left behind his silk sash containing a secret letter from Liangshan chieftain Chao Gai and a bar of gold. Finding the letter, Yan Poxi threatened to immediately deliver Song Jiang to the county execution grounds unless he fulfilled three ruthless demands: give her the townhouse, surrender all his savings, and hand over the entire hundred taels of Liangshan gold. When Song Jiang explained that he had only accepted one gold bar, Yan Poxi shouted for the constables. Pushed beyond human endurance, Song Jiang pressed her against the mattress, drew his dagger, and slit her throat, beginning his fugitive journey to Mount Liang.

Role in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan)

Chapter 20 (Song Jiang Secretly Aides Chao Gai; Yan Poxi Blackmails Welcome Rain): Yan Poxi clutches the letter from Mount Liang, sneering: ‘Song Jiang! You traitorous rebel! Give me a hundred taels of gold and the deed to this house, or I shall shout for the constables at the window!’

Chapter 21 (Song Jiang Kills Yan Poxi in Wrath; The Tiger-Clerk Flees Yuncheng): Song Jiang begs for the letter; Yan Poxi screams: ‘Murderer!’ In a flash of fury, Song Jiang’s dagger cuts across her white throat, her lifeblood staining the floorboards.
