Xiahou Heng (夏侯衡, Hạ Hầu Hành) was a prominent Cao Wei nobleman and the eldest son (dishi, legitimate heir) of the legendary general Xiahou Yuan (夏侯渊, Hạ Hầu Uyên) and Lady Ding (empress sister to Madam Ding (丁氏, Đinh Thị), Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo)‘s primary wife). Hailing from Qiao County, Pei Commandery (present-day Bozhou, Anhui), Xiahou Heng inherited the official lineage and prestige of the Xiahou clan, one of the most powerful military houses backing the Cao Wei dynasty.

To solidify the political and familial bond between the Cao and Xiahou clans, Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) arranged for Xiahou Heng to marry his own niece—the daughter of Cao Cao’s younger brother. This high-profile political marriage placed Xiahou Heng in an exceptionally influential position among the Wei aristocracy, serving as both the eldest son of a founding general and a direct son-in-law of the imperial Cao house.

In 219 AD, Xiahou Yuan (夏侯渊, Hạ Hầu Uyên) was killed in action at Mount Dingjun during the Hanzhong Campaign. Following his father’s tragic death, Xiahou Heng inherited his father’s noble rank. Due to Xiahou Yuan’s extraordinary merit in establishing the Wei state, the imperial court created a special split peerage: Xiahou Heng was granted the title of Marquis of Anning (安寧亭侯), while his father’s original marquisate and the bulk of the hereditary fief lands were divided among or inherited by his younger brothers, including Xiahou Ba (夏侯霸, Hạ Hầu Bá) and Xiahou Wei (夏侯威, Hạ Hầu Uy).

Unlike his younger brothers who took up military commands on the frontiers, Xiahou Heng lived a peaceful life as a court noble without major recorded battlefield commands. Upon his death, his marquisate was inherited by his son, Xiahou Ji (夏侯績), and subsequently by his grandson, Xiahou Mai (夏侯買).

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

While Xiahou Heng (夏侯衡, Hạ Hầu Hành) is not prominently featured as an active combat commander in Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his presence represents the deep generational union between Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo)‘s court and Xiahou Yuan (夏侯渊, Hạ Hầu Uyên)‘s household following the battle of Mount Dingjun in Chapter 71.
