The Legend of Wei Dingguo in Water Margin

Wei Dingguo (魏定国), famously nicknamed the “Fire General” (神火將軍), is a prominent warrior featured in the classic Chinese literary masterpiece Water Margin. Set against the turbulent historical backdrop of the late Northern Song Dynasty, he represents one of the most innovative military tacticians in traditional martial folklore due to his devastating mastery of incendiary warfare, pyrotechnics, and early chemical siege weapons.

Origins and Specialized Battlefield Tactics

Originally serving as an imperial defense commander in Lingzhou alongside his close partner Shan Tinggui—known as the “Water General”—he commanded a specialized vanguard force completely outfitted in brilliant crimson armor. Riding a scarlet steed beneath red banners, the commander deployed catastrophic “fire-wagons,” explosive projectiles, and flaming arrows capable of incinerating enemy battle lines within minutes. Together, the complementary pair embodied the strategic philosophy of balancing elemental water and fire in combat.

Surrender and Alliance with Liangshan

When the imperial court ordered the pacification of the marshes, his initial artillery assault inflicted severe casualties upon the rebel ranks. However, following the capture of Shan Tinggui, the noble general Guan Sheng courageously entered the opposing camp alone and unarmed to negotiate. Profoundly moved by Guan Sheng’s chivalry and disillusioned by the rampant corruption in the imperial court, Wei Dingguo abandoned his commission and officially joined Liangshan Marsh, taking the 45th seat as the Earthly Courageous Star.

Heroic Sacrifice and Posthumous Honor

Serving as a fearless vanguard commander, the officer participated in national campaigns against northern foreign invaders and regional rebel forces. During the climactic southern campaign against the insurgent leader Fang La, Wei Dingguo pursued the enemy commander Wang Yin through the gates of Shezhou. Falling victim to a concealed pitfall trap, he was tragically overwhelmed by hidden ambushers, securing an enduring legacy of martial brotherhood and extraordinary battlefield prowess.
