Biography and Literary Origins of Song Wan
Song Wan (宋万), renowned by the colorful moniker ‘Cloud-Dwelling Vajra’ (Yunli Jingang), is a pivotal fictional figure in the classic Chinese epic Water Margin. Set during the turbulent era of the Northern Song Dynasty, he is recognized as one of the 108 Liangshan heroes, holding the 82nd seat and corresponding to the auspicious Earth Demon Star.
Standing tall with an imposing physical presence, he served as one of the original trailblazers of the Liangshan marshlands alongside his trusted comrade Du Qian. Together, they helped establish the foundational defenses of the stronghold long before the arrival of prominent chieftains like Chao Gai and Song Jiang.
Role in the Liangshan Stronghold
Within the fortified mountain lair, Song Wan served primarily as an infantry commander and dependable vanguard officer. Although he was not ranked among the topmost martial prodigies such as Lin Chong or Wu Song, his unwavering loyalty and defensive expertise provided essential stability during early governmental suppression campaigns. His presence anchored the fortress’s perimeter guards and ensured logistical readiness for large-scale deployments.
Campaigns and Demise
Following the imperial amnesty granted to the outlaws, Song Wan marched under imperial banners to suppress several rebellions across the realm. During the grueling expedition against the southern rebel leader Fang La, he participated in the decisive storming of Muzhou. Amid the chaotic clashes against fierce enemy forces, he was overwhelmed in battle and trampled by cavalry, becoming an early casualty among the 72 Earthly Fiends.
