Biography & Historical Record
Sima Fang (司马防, Tư Mã Phòng), courtesy Jian Gong (建公, Kiến Công), was a late Eastern Han civil official of the distinguished Henei Sima lineage at Wen County (河内温县). He held metropolitan and commandery posts — including service as Commandant of the Capital District and Administrator of Yingchuan — and is remembered in later genealogies less for battlefield fame than for fathering the Eight Sons of Sima Fang (司马八达), among them Sima Lang (司马朗, Tư Mã Lãng) and Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý), whose careers would reshape Wei and lay the path to Jin.
Chen Shou’s notices on Sima Yi assume a cultivated official household: a father who could place sons in Han service and who recognized early talent. Sima Fang’s own dates are approximate (c. 149–219), but he belongs to the generation that watched the Yellow Turban crisis, Dong Zhuo’s coup, and the warlord partition — the world into which his sons entered as young men.
