Biography & Historical Record

Shang Hong (尚弘, Chuộng Hồng) is the Army Commandant (行军校尉) who, in Chapter 13, wraps Emperor Xian (刘协, Hán Hiến Đế) and Empress Fu Shou (伏寿, Phục Thọ) in white silk so the imperial couple can be lowered down a high Yellow River bank onto a boat. He has no courtesy name, dates, or home commandery. The flight itself — Li Jue and Guo Si at war, Yang Feng (杨奉, Dương Phụng) and Dong Cheng (董承, Đổng Thừa) escorting the court, the call to the former White Wave captains Han Xian (韩暹, Hàn Tiêm), Li Le (李乐, Lý Lạc), and Hu Cai (胡才, Hồ Tài), the desperate river crossing in winter — is historical. Hou Hanshu’s Annals of Emperor Xian and the contemporary chronicles describe the bank, the shortage of boats, and men cut from the cables. They do not preserve a commandant named Shang Hong performing the silk wrap. Treat that gesture as the novel’s named act inside a real crossing.

In the chapter, the court has already been driven from Hongnong. Yang Feng and Dong Cheng fight a running battle; books, seals, and palace people are thrown away. At the river the bank is too high to step down and pursuers are close. Yang Feng first suggests lashing reins to the emperor’s waist. From the crowd, the empress’s brother Fu De (伏德, Phục Đức) produces more than ten bolts of white silk picked up in the rout and says they can be joined to lower the carriage. Shang Hong wraps emperor and empress in the silk and has the men hang the emperor down first; only then can they board. Li Le stands with a sword on the prow. Fu De carries the empress aboard. People still on the bank seize the hawser; Li Le cuts them into the water, then cuts the fingers of those who claw the second crossing. After the river, barely ten attendants remain. Yang Feng finds an ox-cart to Dayang. Shang Hong is not named again.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 13 (Li Jue and Guo Si Fight Each Other; Yang Feng and Dong Cheng Together Save the Carriage): On the high Yellow River bank, with Li Jue and Guo Si’s pursuit behind, Yang Feng (杨奉, Dương Phụng) would bind the emperor with reins. Fu De (伏德, Phục Đức) offers scavenged white silk. Army Commandant Shang Hong (尚弘, Chuộng Hồng) wraps Emperor Xian (刘协, Hán Hiến Đế) and Empress Fu Shou (伏寿, Phục Thọ), orders the emperor lowered first, and so gets them onto Li Le’s boat. That is his entire action — a named pair of hands in the most famous humiliation of the Han flight.

Summary

  • The 195 eastward flight and the brutal Yellow River crossing are historical. A commandant named Shang Hong (尚弘) wrapping the imperial couple in silk is a novel detail, not a line in Hou Hanshu.

Year: 195 AD (Xingping 2)

  • After Li Jue and Guo Si turned on each other, Yang Feng and Dong Cheng took Emperor Xian out of Chang’an. At the river, boats were few, the bank steep, and many who could not board were cut away or drowned. Li Le and other former White Wave leaders were among the armed escort.

Historical Record

  • Hou Hanshu 9 (孝献帝纪) and the associated chronicles of the Xingping flight; Zizhi Tongjian Xingping 2. The novel Ch.13 names Shang Hong as the officer who performs the silk wrap with Fu De’s scavenged bolts.
