Biography & Historical Record
Ruan Xian (阮咸, Nguyễn Hàm), courtesy name Zhongrong (仲容), was one of the legendary Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove (Trúc lâm thất hiền), an exceptional musician, and a renowned philosopher of the Three Kingdoms and early Western Jin eras. He was the nephew of Ruan Ji (阮籍) and grandson of the famous Jian’an scholar Ruan Yu.
Ruan Xian was celebrated across China for his supreme mastery of musical pitch and acoustics, famously detecting flaws in the imperial tuning bells cast by Xun Xu. He was also a virtuoso of the ancient plucked lute, which was subsequently named after him as the ruan (or ruanxian). Living an utterly unconventional and bohemian life, he drank wine freely, despised bureaucratic hypocrisy, and was affectionately grouped with his uncle as “Big Ruan and Little Ruan” (大阮小阮). Later in life, he served as the Prefect of Shiping (始平太守) in the Western Jin administration.
