Biography & Historical Record
Ruan Hun (阮浑, Nguyễn Hỗn), courtesy name Changcheng (长成), was a scholar and gentleman of the late Three Kingdoms and early Western Jin dynasties. Hailing from Weishi in Chenliu Commandery, he was the son of Ruan Ji (阮籍), the towering poet, philosopher, and iconic figure of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove (Trúc lâm thất hiền).
Endowed with sharp literary wit and an open-hearted temperament, Ruan Hun sought in his youth to emulate the unrestrained Bohemian ethos, unconventional lifestyle, and wine-loving freedom of his celebrated father. However, Ruan Ji famously reprimanded him, remarking: “My nephew Zhongrong (Ruan Xian) has already walked this path; our family cannot afford to have another who neglects the conventions of the world.” Consequently, Ruan Hun tempered his eccentricities, engaged in formal administration, and served as an officer under Sima Liang, Prince of Runan, during the Western Jin dynasty.
