Biography & Historical Record
Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) — 仇, not 丘 — is a fictional Wei officer in Chapter 106. He has no Sanguozhi biography. Some later collations note that Jin Shu’s life of Sima Yi mentions a headquarters clerk Zhang Jing (张静, Trương Tĩnh) in the same rain-and-camp episode; Luo Guanzhong’s “Right Commander Qiu Lian” is the novel’s name for that kind of staff voice, not a proven identity. Write him as fiction unless a reader is specifically comparing the Jin Shu clerk.
The chapter is Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý)‘s 238 campaign against Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên) in Liaodong. After the Wei army has closed on Xiangping, autumn rain falls for a month. Flat ground stands three feet deep; grain boats can run from the Liao River mouth to the city wall; Wei soldiers eat and sleep in water. Left Commander Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh) enters the tent and asks to shift the camp onto the hills ahead. Sima Yi answers that Gongsun Yuan will be taken in a matter of days and that anyone who again proposes moving camp will die. Pei Jing withdraws. A moment later Qiu Lian, Right Commander, repeats the request: the men are suffering in the water; he begs the Grand Commandant to take the high ground. Sima Yi says the order has already gone out and that Qiu Lian has dared to break it. He has Qiu Lian dragged out, beheaded, and the head hung at the camp (or south) gate. The army is cowed and stays in the flood until Gongsun Yuan’s sortie and night flight, after which Sima Yi’s columns close and father and son are killed.
The point of the scene is not hydrology. Sima Yi is teaching the camp that speed and the original plan outrank comfort — the same lesson as his earlier refusal to sit opposite Gongsun Yuan’s prepared field and his dash at the empty nest of Xiangping. Qiu Lian is the officer who says the obvious humane thing one minute too late, and dies to make the order stick.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 106 (Gongsun Yuan Dies at Xiangping; Sima Yi Feigns Illness to Trap Cao Shuang): After Hu Zun’s vanguard and Sima Yi’s decision to bypass the Liao-river forts and strike Xiangping, the autumn rains flood the Wei camp. Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh) asks to move uphill and is refused with a death threat for a second request. Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) makes that second request on behalf of soldiers standing in water. Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý) has him executed and hung at the gate. Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên) later sends his son to talk peace, then flees by night and is taken. The chapter’s second half is the Cao Shuang (曹爽, Tào Sảng) illness ruse in Luoyang; Qiu Lian is already dead in Liaodong.
Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) — Historical & Literary Timeline
Asks to move the flooded camp
After Pei Jing has already been refused, Qiu Lian begs Sima Yi to take the high ground. The standing order is: another request means death.
Beheaded at the gate
Executed for breaking the order; head displayed. The army stays in the flood until Xiangping falls.
Jin Shu clerk, not this name
Sima Yi’s Liaodong rain and refusal to shift camp are historical. Qiu Lian as “Right Commander” is novel; some notes compare Zhang Jing.
Key Relationships
Family
- The novel and the histories name no father, mother, spouse, or child for Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên). He is a one-scene staff officer. Chinese 仇连, Vietnamese Cừu Liên — not 丘连.
Friends
- Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh): Left Commander who makes the same request minutes earlier and lives because he is the first, not the second. Correct person for /pei-jing/ on this site.
Enemies
- Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý): the commander who kills him to freeze the army in place. Not a long feud — a single broken order.
Other
- Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên), courtesy Wenyi (文懿, Văn Ý): the Liaodong rebel whose siege creates the flood. Qiu Lian never faces him.
- Hu Zun (胡遵, Hồ Tuân): Wei vanguard named in the same campaign.
- Cao Shuang (曹爽, Tào Sảng): the second-half target of Chapter 106; no contact with Qiu Lian.

In Novel
Chapter 106
- Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên): Right Commander under Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý) at the flooded Xiangping camp. Autumn rain has stood a month; boats run from the Liao mouth to the wall; soldiers live in three feet of water. After Left Commander Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh) is refused and told that a second request will be a capital offence, Qiu Lian enters and begs to move to high ground for the men's sake. Sima Yi says the order has already been issued, has Qiu Lian taken out and beheaded, and hangs the head at the gate. The army does not move again. Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên) falls later in the chapter. Qiu Lian has no other scene.
In History
Summary
- Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) is not in Chen Shou. Sima Yi's 238 Liaodong campaign, the long rain before Xiangping, and a harsh ban on shifting camp are historical (Jin Shu, Sima Yi). The novel's named Right Commander is literary; some modern notes compare a clerk Zhang Jing.
Year: 238 AD
- Sima Yi sent against Gongsun Yuan; bypasses the Liao forts; sits under Xiangping through the rains; takes the city; kills Gongsun Yuan and Gongsun Xiu.
Historical Record
- Jin Shu 1 (宣帝纪) for the rain and camp discipline; Sanguozhi Gongsun Yuan notices. No 仇连 in the official tables. Hanzi is 仇连 (Cừu Liên), not 丘连.
